Social Art Project : Toktok

Toktok is a new and a bit experimental youth project, which is important, because it brings together two separated social groups. Together they pay attention to their common social problems. Toktok gives youth the tools – teaches them animation film technique – which they can use to draw attention to social problems.

Toktok started from the wish to see the similarities between the people instead of differences. Toktok seeks to join their strength to draw attention to problems, which disturb people who live in Estonia no matter what is their nationality, world view or religion. It is important to emphasize that the themes of short films made during Toktok were suggested by youth themselves. They are the concerning issues in our society which are recognized by the youth, but which however are not only their personal problems, but instead our social problems.

In March and April 2010 eight short films were produced under the name of Toktok. Each film was made in cooperation by two strangers. During film production the communication of film makers was limited to hand-written letter changing and the authors met one another for the first time at premiere to write together the synopsis for their films. As we can see from the films the authors share their perception of the world and understanding of problems due to the fact that they live in the same town, in the same society and they belong to the same age-group.

Why do we call it „Toktok“?

„Toktok“ sounds like a knocking on the door of the neighboring school which is geographically very close, but socially seems to be far away. Toktok brought together youth from two schools in the centre of Tallinn. On the other hand, „Toktok“ also sounds like a knocking on our conscience! We are all responsible for the problems which describe our society, no matter if the problem is overconsumption, ignorance, corruption or illegal drugs. “That Toktok project enabled them to express their opinion about what is going on in our society and to draw attention to social problems.”
