Which apple do you prefer? The Golden? The Gala? The Pink Lady? The Granny Smith? But are there only four types of apples? There are 20.000 types of apples but in the supermarket we can only find 4 types :. Apples are not only colours or brands they have their own history: production, transport, distribution… Let’s try to discover it through one participative tools of sensitization.
The apple is a product of mass consumption. It’s the third consumed fruit in the world and everywhere we can find it. It must be produced all year long; it has to respect the requirements of the mass-market retailing to satisfy consumers’ taste.
In order to understand how the apple we eat is produced Frères des Hommes with the help of Hemispheres participants created the “Apple Game”.
This game is used directly in the street with non captive public. The passers are invited to guess where and how the apples are produced by tasting them. The objective is to understand the issues of mass and delocalized production.
Let’s start to play!
First step: Only with a first view try to guess which apple comes from the supermarket? Which apple is organic? Which one was bought in a market? And which one is produced locally through an organic way?
Second step: Now you can taste! What is your opinion? Are they all sweet? Do they have the same taste or texture? What could influence it? You can change your first answers.
Third step: Start the discussion. How do you feed yourself? Do you eat organic products? Local products? What is the impact of our production? Do you know that we export a lot in Africa and that our apples take the place of local fruit? What is the effect for peasant?
So many questions just around 4 apples!
